First summer meeting

The first meeting of the summer will take place today at 5:15 PM in the Espresso Royale at 1117 West Oregon in Urbana (across from the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts). Come!

Those who attended will report on the landa kongreso, and we’ll discuss whether this is the best time and place for meetings for the rest of the summer.

We’re tentatively planning to resume meeting at the same time during the summer: Thursdays at 5:15 PM. The first summer meeting will take place June 3rd.

End-of-semester picnic Thursday

Thursday May 6th is the Esperanto group picnic!

We’ll met at the usual time and place (room 1120 Foreign Language Building at 5:15 PM). If the weather is good, we’ll go outside to the quad.

Come! If you can, bring food to share, but don’t let that keep you from coming!

This will be our last regular meeting of the semester, but several group members will stay through the summer, so we anticipate that there will be some kind of summer meetings. We’ll post details.

Meeting changes

We’re making some minor changes in our meeting schedule.

Thursday meeting for beginners

We’ll still have our regular Thursday meetings in the Foreign Language Building, Room 1120 at 5:15 PM – 6:15 PM, but these meetings will now focus specifically on beginners. Our plan is to work our way through Gerda Malaperis, together with other materials (including Mazi and Teach Yourself Esperanto).

We’ll be starting fresh this coming Thursday, February 4th, 2010, but beginning students should feel free to join us at any time through the semester. Intermediate and advanced students are welcome as well.

Saturday Conversation Group

On Saturdays at 2:00 PM we meet for Esperanto conversation in the lobby of the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. We converse, play games, watch videos, etc.

Esperantists at any level are welcome to join us, but beginners should be aware that we’re trying to do our Saturday meetings entirely in Esperanto.

Public presentation on Esperanto

What is Esperanto, the easy-to-learn international language, all about? Come to this brief presentation which will discuss the basics of the language, study abroad and cheap travel opportunities, the culture of Esperantists, and the offerings of the Esperanto@UIUC RSO. Free classes begin the following week, so come check it out! PS: There will be noms.

It’s a new semester!

Welcome back!

Our current plan is that we’ll continue meeting at our usual time (5:15 PM Thursdays) in our usual place (Foreign Language Building). These meetings will focus on teaching Esperanto to beginners and near-beginners.

One thing that we want to talk about at our first meeting (January 21) is adding a second weekly meeting for conversation in Esperanto and other activities like Esperanto games.

Next week’s meeting will be an “introduction to Esperanto” for the general public, probably in the Natural History Building–details to follow.

December 17th we’ll celebrate Zamenhof Day
Decembero 24th through Januaro 14th we won’t meet
January 21st we’ll meet as usual.

On going to ARE

The Fall Esperanto Weekend (ARE) is a first-rate Esperanto meeting in the United States. It takes place every year during the Columbus Day weekend. The last few years it has been at Silver Bay in New York. It is jointly organized with the Quebec Esperanto Society, so it’s one of the most international Esperanto conferences in the US.

It’s not trivially easy to get to Silver Bay from Illinois. However, according to my brother Steven Brewer, almost every participant travels through Albany to get there–and any of them would be happy to help someone cover the last leg of the trip to the conference, if you can get yourself as far as Albany.

If you’re interested in attending and want to be put in touch with other attendees to arrange transport from Albany, let me know and I’ll put you in touch with my brother.
