Meeting changes

We’re making some minor changes in our meeting schedule.

Thursday meeting for beginners

We’ll still have our regular Thursday meetings in the Foreign Language Building, Room 1120 at 5:15 PM – 6:15 PM, but these meetings will now focus specifically on beginners. Our plan is to work our way through Gerda Malaperis, together with other materials (including Mazi and Teach Yourself Esperanto).

We’ll be starting fresh this coming Thursday, February 4th, 2010, but beginning students should feel free to join us at any time through the semester. Intermediate and advanced students are welcome as well.

Saturday Conversation Group

On Saturdays at 2:00 PM we meet for Esperanto conversation in the lobby of the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. We converse, play games, watch videos, etc.

Esperantists at any level are welcome to join us, but beginners should be aware that we’re trying to do our Saturday meetings entirely in Esperanto.

Public presentation on Esperanto

What is Esperanto, the easy-to-learn international language, all about? Come to this brief presentation which will discuss the basics of the language, study abroad and cheap travel opportunities, the culture of Esperantists, and the offerings of the Esperanto@UIUC RSO. Free classes begin the following week, so come check it out! PS: There will be noms.

It’s a new semester!

Welcome back!

Our current plan is that we’ll continue meeting at our usual time (5:15 PM Thursdays) in our usual place (Foreign Language Building). These meetings will focus on teaching Esperanto to beginners and near-beginners.

One thing that we want to talk about at our first meeting (January 21) is adding a second weekly meeting for conversation in Esperanto and other activities like Esperanto games.

Next week’s meeting will be an “introduction to Esperanto” for the general public, probably in the Natural History Building–details to follow.

December 17th we’ll celebrate Zamenhof Day
Decembero 24th through Januaro 14th we won’t meet
January 21st we’ll meet as usual.

On going to ARE

The Fall Esperanto Weekend (ARE) is a first-rate Esperanto meeting in the United States. It takes place every year during the Columbus Day weekend. The last few years it has been at Silver Bay in New York. It is jointly organized with the Quebec Esperanto Society, so it’s one of the most international Esperanto conferences in the US.

It’s not trivially easy to get to Silver Bay from Illinois. However, according to my brother Steven Brewer, almost every participant travels through Albany to get there–and any of them would be happy to help someone cover the last leg of the trip to the conference, if you can get yourself as far as Albany.

If you’re interested in attending and want to be put in touch with other attendees to arrange transport from Albany, let me know and I’ll put you in touch with my brother.

E-USA congress: 28th to the 31st of May, 2010

The date and location of the Esperanto-USA landa kongreso has been set: 28th to the 31st of May, 2010 in Washington, D.C.

New regular meeting time & place

We’ve got a new regular meeting time and place:

Thursdays at 5:15 PM in the Foreign Language building. We’ll gather in the atrium on the ground floor, then pick a free classroom when we’re ready to start.

This semester’s first meeting of the Esperanto club will be TODAY, Thursday September 3rd, at 5:15 PM in room 323 of the Natural History Building (the second building east of the student union–Harker Hall is in between).

For interested people who can’t get there at 5:15 PM, a couple of us will show up at 4:15 PM to answer questions.

Please join us for the meeting if you can, or show up for the pre-meeting if that works better. There will be snacks!

Our main goals are to:

Answer any questions people have about Esperanto,
Talk about plans for the club this semester,
Find out if this meeting time and place will work going forward.
